Heads Up! The IRS has Gone Paperless for Tax Payments
Tax Team
September 25, 2025

The IRS has made a significant shift that will affect how many of us handle our federal tax payments. As of September 30, 2025, paper checks and money orders are a thing of the past.
What’s the Big Change?
Under a new federal requirement, Executive Order 14247, the IRS no longer accepts paper checks or money orders for federal tax payments as of September 30, 2025.
This means all federal tax payments, including your estimated taxes, need to be made electronically.
Who Needs to Pay Attention?
This new requirement applies to anyone who makes individual income tax payments. If you’re used to mailing in a check for your taxes, you’ll now need to switch to an electronic payment method.

What Are My Options for Electronic Payments?
The good news is that the IRS offers several secure and convenient electronic payment methods. You can choose the one that works best for you:
- IRS Direct Pay: This free service allows you to make payments directly from your bank account.
- Direct Debit: You can set this up through your tax preparer or tax software.
- EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System): This is a free service from the Treasury Department that offers a secure way to pay all types of federal taxes.
- Credit or Debit Card: You can pay through one of the IRS-approved third-party payment providers. Just be aware that these services may charge an additional processing fee.
- Digital Wallets: As they become available, new real-time payment options will also be accepted.
What You Can Do Now to Get Ready
To ensure a smooth transition and avoid any issues, we recommend taking the following actions:
