How to Make IRS Tax Payments Online

IRS Estimated Tax Payment
What You Will Need
- Your Social Security Number (or EIN for businesses)
- Your estimated tax amount and which quarter it’s for (e.g., Q1, Q2, etc.)
- Bank routing and account number
- Valid email address (for confirmation)

- Navigate to the IRS Payment Page
- Click Pay individual tax—no sign-in required
- Click Make a payment
- Select Reason for Payment: choose Estimated Tax, then specify that it’s for Form 1040-ES.
- Verify your identity, filing status and your personal information (name, SSN, address, etc.)
- Enter your payment information including amount, bank account and routing numbers. You’ll also be prompted to choose your account type (checking or savings)
- Review your entries carefully, submit, and you’ll get a confirmation number and emailed receipt.
Note: You can change or cancel the payment up to two business days before the payment date using the “Look Up a Payment” feature.
How to Pay Balance Due on IRS Direct Pay
What You’ll Need
- Filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.)
- Social Security Number (SSN)
- Bank routing number and account number
- Email address
- Payment amount and payment date
- Year of the balance due you are paying

- Navigate to the IRS Payment Page
- Click Pay individual tax—no sign-in required
- Click Make a payment
- Select Reason for Payment: choose Balance Due
- Select Apply Payment to: Income Tax – Form 1040
- Select the correct year you are paying the balance for, click continue and confirm
- Verify your identity, filing status and your personal information (name, SSN, address, etc.)
- Enter your payment information including amount, bank account and routing numbers. You’ll also be prompted to choose your account type (checking or savings)
- Review your entries carefully, submit, and you’ll get a confirmation number and emailed receipt.
