How to Make IRS Tax Payments Online

IRS Estimated Tax Payment

What You Will Need

  • Your Social Security Number (or EIN for businesses)
  • Your estimated tax amount and which quarter it’s for (e.g., Q1, Q2, etc.)
  • Bank routing and account number
  • Valid email address (for confirmation)

  1. Navigate to the IRS Payment Page
  2. Click Pay individual tax—no sign-in required
  3. Click Make a payment
  4. Select Reason for Payment: choose Estimated Tax, then specify that it’s for Form 1040-ES.
  5. Verify your identity, filing status and your personal information (name, SSN, address, etc.)
  6. Enter your payment information including amount, bank account and routing numbers. You’ll also be prompted to choose your account type (checking or savings)
  7. Review your entries carefully, submit, and you’ll get a confirmation number and emailed receipt.

Note: You can change or cancel the payment up to two business days before the payment date using the “Look Up a Payment” feature.

How to Pay Balance Due on IRS Direct Pay

What You’ll Need

  • Filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.)
  • Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Bank routing number and account number
  • Email address
  • Payment amount and payment date
  • Year of the balance due you are paying

  1. Navigate to the IRS Payment Page

  4. Select Reason for Payment: choose Balance Due
  5. Select Apply Payment to: Income Tax – Form 1040
  6. Select the correct year you are paying the balance for, click continue and confirm
  7. Verify your identity, filing status and your personal information (name, SSN, address, etc.)
  8. Enter your payment information including amount, bank account and routing numbers. You’ll also be prompted to choose your account type (checking or savings)
  9. Review your entries carefully, submit, and you’ll get a confirmation number and emailed receipt.
