The State Started Sending Minnesota Direct Tax Rebates to Eligible Taxpayers This Week

The State of Minnesota has started sending out Direct Tax Rebate payments to eligible Minnesota taxpayers for the 2021 tax year. Payments began to go out this week, and by the end of September, the MN Department of Revenue expects to issue 2.1 million rebate payments to eligible Minnesota residents.

What is The Minnesota Direct Tax Rebate?

The Minnesota Direct Tax Rebate is a program that is putting money back into the hands of its residents by returning a portion of the taxes paid by eligible individuals and families in the 2021 tax year. It also demonstrates the state government’s commitment to supporting its residents and acknowledges the importance of their role in building a thriving community.

Who will receive the rebate?

To be eligible for the Direct Tax Rebate, individuals must have filed their state taxes for the 2021 tax year. The payment amount varies depending on factors such as income level and filing status.

  • $520 for married couples that filed a joint return with an adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less
  • $260 for all other individual with adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less
  • Additional $260 for each dependent claimed, up to three dependents.

Who is eligible?

Eligible recipients were identified by using previously filed 2021 income tax or property tax refund returns. Taxpayers meeting all the following requirements are eligible to receive the rebate.

  • You were a Minnesota resident for part or all of 2021
  • You filed one of the following returns by December 31, 2022:
    • 2021 Form M1, Minnesota Individual Income Tax
    • 2021 Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter’s Property Tax Refund
  • Your 2021 adjusted gross income (line 1 of Form M1 or Form M1PR) was:
    • $150,000 or less for married joint filers
    • $75,000 or less for all other filers
  • Someone else did not claim you as a dependent on their 2021 Minnesota income tax return.

Taxpayers who died before January 1, 2023, are not eligible.

How do I get may rebate?

Eligible taxpayers do not need to submit an application. The state has automatically calculated and distributed the rebate payments based on their filed tax returns. Most recipients will receive the rebate payment to the bank account or mailing address on their 2021 income tax or property tax refund return.

  • Direct Deposit payments will be deposited to taxpayer bank account starting in late-August. The payment will appear as “State of Minnesota 2021 Tax Rebate Program” on the bank statement.
  • Paper checks will be delivered by mail starting in early-September. The checks are protected by standard banking safeguards to help detect and prevent fraud and will be mailed in a plain white envelope.
